I wish I could draw!

I love to write picture books and illustrated fiction. Pictures are so important to these books, and I am in awe of the creative skill that the illustrators I work with have. Joe Berger (illustrator of the the Hubble Bubble Granny Trouble series) has written a blog post where he demonstrates this!

In this post he shows how the character is first drawn, using traditional pencil and paper, and then how it is scanned and coloured using Photoshop.

Like all experts, he makes it look easy!

The latest title in the fiction series, 'Hubble Bubble, The Messy Monkey Business!' was published in May.

'Baddies, Beasties and a Sprinkling of Crumbs!' wins Award.

When I was thinking about this story I wanted it to be fast, pacy and driven by memorable characters that children would root for, find funny, and love. I wanted it to feel quite 'old school' too - like one of those old films I watched as a child; a real goodie/baddie romp. But I also needed to make it resonate with the children of today.

You never know how your book will be received. You write it simply and honestly, and then you have to wait. You love it. But will children love it too? Have you got the recipe right?

Today I won a FBA from the children of Lancashire. A FBA is a Fantastic Book Award. This competition was set up by the Lancashire Library service where  children in local primary schools voted for their favourite books. Winning any award is wonderful. It makes you feel valued, it makes you feel proud, but winning an award which has been voted for by children is really, really special. Because my stories are written for children, and they're very honest.

It's been great to get letters from children saying why they like my Crumbs series. They really make me smile because then I know I did something right...

"...We loved the part when Aunt Beastly fancied the Baddies and the hilarious traps when they used washing up liquid to stop the Unstoppables ... Thank you for such a great book!"

I'm so grateful to have won this award and would like to thank the Lancashire Library service and the children of Lancashire for loving Martha, Otto, Scarlett (and the gang!) as much as I do...

Where I work...

My cottage is old. It’s damp. But that’s fine. Because old cottages are meant to be. Its foundations are deep and its walls unashamedly bumpy.
Its nature is such that you have to pass through one room to get to another. And my desk is found in the room in the middle; a thoroughfare for cats, dogs and people. This is good...

Dare to be Different!

Pandora’s granny in my Hubble Bubble series is unequivocally different.

From her “alternative” car (a jet-powered broomstick), to her burping bat pets and cauldron handbag, Granny is the new black; quite the chicest granny on the block!

But having a granny who’s so “different” does have its embarrassing moments. And so – just the once – Pandora suggests that Granny tries on trend “normalish” instead...

'I Want My Daddy'

My dad died when I was a very little girl, but that never stopped me wanting him. There are special times in your life that you desperately want to share. Although I don't have many memories of him, the ones that I do have are very happy ones.

This week my new book "I Want My Daddy" is published by Little Tiger Press. Little Arthur needs his daddy too.

Daddy's help is useful, and his love is unconditional, together they are making memories that will last forever.

I hope you like it,  Tracey

Fall Festival Story walk

It's always great to discover that a book has been the inspiration for a community activity that has involved all ages, from young to old The Fall Festival Story walk was just such an event. They used spreads from "Just Right for Two" to create a walk in the woods. The spreads were part of a discovery trail. It was a great success, and I wish I could have been there, it looked absolutely beautiful - petersrockassociation.org

A Scribble of Illustrators

Two of the illustrators I've worked with at Nosy Crow (Joe Berger and Steven Lenton) are taking part in an exhibition this week in Bristol, "A Scribble of Illustrators".

I went along to the opening night to support them, and see some of the brilliant work they were exhibiting, and meet some of the other illustrators...
